AYURVEDA Way of Life

“The Ayurveda Way of Life”

By Sandy Zimmerman

Lothar Pirc, the President of the Maharishi Ayurveda Health Center in Lancaster, Massachusetts,

and Managing Director at the Maharishi Ayurveda Health Center in Bad Ems, Germany, and his wife

Dr. Karin Pirc, MD, PhD, and Eastern physician, is the Medical Advisor at Lancaster and Medical

Director at their Germany location.

Lothar is a man dedicated to awakening the public to natural Ayurvedac health care.

He travels around the world speaking to heads of government, national health organizations,

business leaders, and physicians groups.

I was happy to have the opportunity to meet Lothar and Karin during my visit to their

Lancaster Ayurveda Health Center.

Lothar described the difference between Eastern and Western medical treatment.

“In the United States, medical doctors are in and out of the examination room for an average

of seven minutes with each patient while eastern physicians, called Vaidyas, spend from one

hour to one-in-a-half hours with each patient during the initial consultation.

In fact, the Vaidya sees the guests every day to monitor the spa treatments and tailor

individual recommendations for their diet and even the ingredients in the massage oils which

would be used.

There are 20 different types of massages and 50 different kinds of oils from India.

One person spends time just preparing all of the massage oils in the Oil Kitchen.”

The Ayurvedac Wet Treatments are very different from the ones we are usually experience in the

United States, like the Vichy Shower.

Lothar explained, “The Pizhichill treatment, also called the Royal Treatment, combines

synchronizing massage with a hot treatment.

Two technicians (therapists) pour two gallons of sesame oil over the client’s entire body.

This treatment is good for back problems, the joints, and is effective for detoxification.

Before the treatment, the oil was clear with a golden color but after the oil changed to a dark brown

color.

A study indicated that the oil held high concentrations of environmental toxins that were flushed

out of the client’s system. In our Lancaster and Germany health centers, we emphasize the

Panchakarma treatment for detoxification.

There were two kinds of toxins, the water soluble toxins are easy to get rid of by practicing sports,

drinking or fasting.

Then we have the fat soluble toxins stored in the fat tissues- the pesticides, herbicides and heavy

metals which usually stay in the body for 50 years.

Yoga is good for your Health

Yoga for your Health

By Sandy Zimmerman

(Photos by Sandy Zimmerman unless indicated.)

After enjoying the luxurious Ayurvedic spa treatments, there is so much more.

I felt like discovering what else the Maharishi Ayurveda Health Center had to offer.

Everything is about attempting to improve your health.

Their program includes three delicious organic vegetarian meals a day, accommodations,

DVD’s, lectures on health and the prevention of medical problems, yoga, cooking classes,

and planned activities.

The sign said, “Yoga Tonight” so I walked into the large living room which alternates as a lecture

room, a place for yoga, and a comfortable setting to relax and meet the other guests.

Since I do not have time to exercise in Las Vegas and have not participated in yoga before I

wondered if they had a beginner’s class and was very happy when I found out that Robin, the

instructor, tailors his class to each person.

Robin explained, “We do not use complicated positions or strenuous poses.

                            _______________________________

You only need very light stretching yoga postures.

There are 12 different postures and can be performed easily at home, the best time

is before breakfast.

One is the very unique Sun Salutations.

The Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar) posture is great because it tones every major muscle in

your body.  You only practice 5-15 minutes a day.

The Sun Salutation is a complete Ayurvedic exercise that simultaneously

integrates the whole physiology including mind, body and breadth.

It strengthens and stretches all the major muscle groups, lubricates the joints,

blood flow and circulation is increased throughout the body.

It is a cycle of 12 postures performed in a fluid sequence

one right after another.

Each motion should be synchronized with the breath.

By moving smoothly into each pose, breathing fully

and easily through the nostrils,

holding a pose for a minimum of three seconds, each cycle takes

about one minute.

These 12 poses will help you on every level of physiology.

Your mind will be clearer, yoga will increase your vitality, feel balance and more strength.

If you have a problem sleeping at night, yoga can help.

Yoga can also assist in eliminating many superficial imbalances that people have.

Yoga goes along with the Maharishi Ayurvedic program because they want to

the body and mind.

Everything we do at the Maharishi Ayurveda Health Center is to balance the mind and body.

Yoga compliments the program.”

Svendana: Tent Instead of a Sauna

“Svendana Tent Instead of a Sauna”

By Sandy Zimmerman

(Photos by Sandy Zimmerman)

The ancient Ayurvedic (Means the Science of Life) philosophy follows the principals of living a healthier life in order to balance your mind and body.  According to the World Health Organization, Ayurveda is the oldest continuously practiced system of health-care in the world.

Each of the Maharishi Ayurveda Health Center’s treatments is unbelievably the ultimate pampering you can experience. Some clients visit the center just for the luxury, the sensations of the treatments. But if you are seeking a way to reduce stress and calm your nerves, this is the place to visit

Svendana (Sway-d-na), Sanskrit for heat therapy, is a sweating treatment designed to open the pores and detoxify the body.  After one of their very pleasurable warm oil massage treatments, you lie naked on your back just covered with a towel as the two technicians (therapists) prepare a pot of boiling specially herbalized liquid for the treatment.

A specially designed, curved wooden-framed tent, or dome, covered with canvas is unfolded and brought to you. In just a few minutes, you are in the Ayurvedic-style sauna. Although the tent covers the entire body, your head and face remain outside. You do not feel anything because the tent is around you but not touching. It is not attached to the table.

The herbal concoction runs through a tube to bring the steam inside the tent. While you are surrounded by the warm steam inside the tent, the technicians are continuously trying to find your comfort level so you are not too hot.  One technician rubs your head with a piece of cold coconut until it melts or places cold towels across your forehead.  The continuous controlled flow of warm steam combined with the cold feels good. The Svendana Treatment seems to be more enjoyable than a usual sauna. After this 20 minute treatment you will be heading for your room to be lulled into a restful sleep.

The Maharishi Ayurveda Health Center’s motto: Prevention . . . Rejuvenation . . . and . . . Relief.  Their other treatments include the Abhyanga, Udvarthana, Pizhichill, Basti, Shirodara, Nasya, Netra Tarpana, Pinda Sveda, and more.  Very seldom do you find a spa health center that specializes in Ayurvedic Treatments.  Each treatment is unique and recommended by the Vaidya (Eastern Ayurvedic physician) for different health problems.

The technicians even provide instructions so you can to continue some of their treatments at home to keep that wondrous feeling of tranquility. Of course nothing compares to being there! These Ayurvedic experiences are worth the trip!

According to the Lancaster Health Center, “We focus exclusively on the most authentic form of Ayurveda, called Maharishi Ayurveda.  Among its outstanding features are: the high standards of training for our technicians, the purity of products, and authenticity of the treatments. Maharishi Ayurveda gives special emphasis to preventative and rejuvenative approaches that are essential for proper comprehensive health care.  These include stress management, lifestyle and wellness education and dietary recommendations.”

They have thought of everything for your mind and body from eating healthy, taking care of yourself, proper exercise, treatments, and lifestyle.

If you are ready to really be pampered from head to toe, contact the Maharishi Ayurveda Health Center.  For information, call: (877)-890- 8600.  They are located at 679 George Hill Road, Lancaster, Massachusetts, just 1 hour from Boston.  www.lancasterhealthcenter.com

The Relaxing Treatment

“The Relaxing Treatment”

By Sandy Zimmerman

(PHOTOS: Maharishi Ayurveda Health Center unless indicated.)

Shirodara

(shiro-dar-a),

the ancient

Ayurvedic

treatment from

India, is sometimes

called the Relaxing

Treatment.

In Sandscript,

Shiro

means “head”

and dhara means “to flow”.

This describes the process of slowly pouring specially blended

herbal oil over the forehead or “Third Eye”, the chakra point

above and between the eyebrows.

The ingredients in the custom prepared oil are prepared in the

Oil Kitchen and depend upon what you need to balance

your body.

With my busy schedule, I was happy to experience the Relaxing

Treatment.

Two technicians (therapists) were waiting for me when I arrived in the

treatment room.

Two technicians really heightened the experience and made me feel like a queen.

A Shirodhara stand is placed behind the massage bed reaching up

around 10” above the client’s head. An arm extends out about 18”

holding a bowl.

I was lying on my back with my eyes closed when I felt a gentle

stream of soothing warm oil dripping on my head.

It flowed down from my

forehead into my hair and felt very

soothing as I drifted into a pleasant state of calmness.

The technician kept the oil flow constant while adjusting the

valve to keep it moving slightly so the oil would reach around the

sides of the face.

This beautiful specifically designed tap allowed accurate control of the flow of

the oil.

It maintains the oil at a certain temperature for the time needed.

Instead of playing music on CD’s, the Shirodhara treatment is

practiced in silence so the client can be completely relaxed

concentrating on the feeling of the oil touching their skin and

hair.

Dining for Your Health

Dining for Your Health

By Sandy Zimmerman

(Photos:   Maharishi Ayurveda Health Center)

Food is very important when you are on vacation especially at a

health center.

The Maharishi Ayurveda Health Center coordinates all of the

meals with their guest’s health in mind.

Everything is prepared fresh, never reheated or precooked.

They strive for delicious, healthy organic vegetarian food that

stimulates and satisfies all the senses.

And I really enjoyed the difference!

The tantalizing aromas, the wide variety of selections, and

surprising flavorful tastes made each meal an experience.

Chef Mosa is specially trained in the Ayurvedic- style of cooking.

Usually when we are invited to a cooking class at other

restaurants or hotels, there are just one or two dishes to prepare.

Tonight we

watched

Chef Mosa cook

the entire dinner

for all of the guests

in the health center.

While she was busy cooking, cutting, or mashing all of the

ingredients for each dish,

Chef Mosa discussed her recipes and instructions for preparing

Ayurvedic meals.

She explained, “We believe the food you eat reflects in your

health and our food is part of the treatment.”

Some guests were taking the Ayurvedic program under the

supervision of the Vaidya while others had the option of deciding

for themselves.

Cooking is an art and Chef Mosa creates a healthy menu with just

the right mix of spices that taste good!

Chef Mosa recommended, “We wanted to give our guests the

opportunity to cook this food at their home because it is not

difficult.

You can still have great taste bringing healthy food into your

life!”

Their meals consisted of grains (wheat products), pastas, soup,

nuts (except peanuts), seeds (in small amounts), spices, fruits,

vegetables, legumes, and more.

They do not use onions and garlic but leaks instead.

Some types of cheese are better for digestion and health.

Since cooked food is easier to digest, most of the fruit and

vegetables are cooked in different ways.

The guests took notes about Mosa’s cooking techniques and

received the recipes.

They had previewed the cooking process and finally everyone

walked to the dining room curious about tasting the meal she

had just prepared.

Pizzichili: The Ultimate Indulgence!

December 13th, 2010 • by admin

Pizzichili: The Ultimate Indulgence!

By Sandy Zimmerman

In ancient India, the Maharajas were pampered with spectacular

Ayurvedic wellness treatments but don’t be jealous.

Today these wondrous treatments are NOT ONLY for Maharajas,

they are being enjoyed at the Maharishi Ayurveda Health Center,

just one hour from Boston.

Pizzichili, one of their unbelievably comforting treatments, is

known as the Royal Treatment and that is the perfect name for it!

The “Wet table” is similar to a Vichy Treatment but without all of

the showers above you.

The two therapists (Ayurvedic technicians) do it all!

It is the personal attention that makes all of their spa

treatments so different!

The technicians entered the treatment room holding glass

pitchers of a specially prepared blend of warm herbalized oil.

With one technician

on each side, they

slowly poured the oil

simultaneously in

perfect harmony as

though they were one

person.

How could the two be so in tune with each other, their

movements synchronized so well?

After I am practically swimming in a warm bath of oil, the table is

a little slippery as I turn each way to let the technicians reach the

areas of my body.

They also used a hose to apply the warm oil for an entirely

different feeling.

The two women spend so much time with a constant flow of oil

for this 90 minute treatment!

Pizzichili is considered a deep massage although it does not hurt

you.

The technicians do not poke and probe your body.

This is a gentle massage with warm oil penetrating deep inside the

skin to balance the body and rid you of the toxins.

The gentle massage includes “marma points” – similar to the

pressure points in reflexology, acupuncture and acupressure.

Clients choose whether they decide for

themselves which spa treatments they wish or have a

consultation with the Vaidya, an Eastern

Ayurvedic medical practitioner from India, to

recommend a special preparation of warm blended herb oil just

for their medical imbalances.

The Ancient Abhyanga Oil Therapy

November 28th, 2010 • by Sandy Zimmerman

The Ancient Abhyanga Oil Therapy

By Sandy Zimmerman

(Photos by MAHC unless indicated.)

Visiting the Maharishi Ayurveda Health Center was truly an

unforgettable experience of everything from their spa

treatments, the food we ate, and their eastern philosophy of life!

After reviewing

spas around

the world for

over 25 years,

I suddenly was in the

world of India’s

5,000 year old

classical Ayurvedic

treatments, and best of all,

I did not have to leave

the United States.

The entire Maharishi

Ayurvedic experience was planned to relax,

rejuvenate, and refresh their clients.

I was surprised to see two technicians (therapists) waiting for me

in the treatment room, not just one as in most of the other health

centers.  One professionally skilled technician could create a

feeling of serenity but two, at the same time, are the height of

luxurious indulgence.

I wondered about

the

Abhyanga

(abh-yan-ga)

oil therapy

treatment the

Vaidya

(Vigh-dyah),

their

eastern

Ayurvedac

physician,

had

recommended

for me.

He composed the exact formula blend of massage oils

specifically for each client.

These massage oils are composed of carefully chosen organic

herbs, sesame seeds, or other natural ingredients all prepared in

their Oil Kitchen.

Gentle is the word for their treatments!

These are not the usual probing, kneading, intrusive massage.

Just before the treatment, they warm the massage oil to body

temperature in a pan over low heat.

This allows the oil to become more liquid and be able to penetrate

into the skin while the effect continues for hours.

It is important that the oil is not overheated.

First I sat in a chair with my feet on a

warm towel heated by a hot water bag.

The warm massage oil felt soothing as one technician

gently rubbed the oil into my head, then they both

massaged my face, ears, and neck.

AYURVEDA-5,000 Year Old Health Treatments

November 21st, 2010 • by Sandy Zimmerman

Eastern method-Three Finger Pulse

Health Treatments from India

 By Sandy Zimmerman

(Photos by Sandy Zimmerman unless indicated)

Instead of simply choosing one of 1,000’s of destinations for your

next getaway, why not stay at the Maharishi Ayurveda Health

Center for a vacation that could change your life!

This amazing health and wellness center is not like any other I

have ever seen in over 25 years of reviewing spas and wellness

centers.  Everything about the center is different.

They are the only health center in the United States that

specializes in the holistic Ayurveda approach to health and

wellness.

(PHOTO: MAHC)

Western doctors usually

treat medical problems after their patient’s are ill while

Maharishi Ayurveda seeks to balance the body and mind

naturally in order to prevent illness before

there are any symptoms.

In keeping with their philosophy, “Health Begins Within”,

Maharishi Ayurveda’s Vaidya (pronounced “Vigh-dyah”), an

eastern Ayurvedac physician, guides the program of spa health

treatments, meals, meditation, lectures,

and activities individually

created especially for each person.

As every new guest begins their health program by arranging a

consultation with the Vaidya, Vaidya Jagtdish Vaidya,

I entered his office.  He was dressed in traditional long white

Indian clothing. Soft spoken yet well respected in his field,

the Vaidya asked me questions which western doctors usually do

not discuss along with the typical information.

He wanted to know about my occupation, lifestyle, interests,

meals, health problems, where I was born, and more.

Vaidyas study the whole person and all aspects that

affect their life.

The Vaidya took my pulse with three fingers (Nadivigyan

technique), not to count the beats of the

heart as is the common practice in the west.

He felt the Vata, Pitta and Kapha pulse to identify any imbalances

or abnormal states in different parts of the human body.

This is more than just counting the beats.

They feel advance warning signs of medical problems can be

determined from the pulse.

Vaidya Jagtdish explains, “Every person is looking for longevity

and happiness.  Ayurveda means the knowledge and

science of life.

Eastern and Western doctors ultimately are all doing something

about life. We each follow our ancient or traditional knowledge

like custodians.”

In the environment of their beautiful historic hundred year old

mansion, the surrounding 200 acre forest

and friendly staff, you can relax and enjoy

the experience.

The James Bond Wine Table

When you visit Del Friscos, do not miss seeing the most amazing $1.2 million dollar James Bond table. Looking like a normal table at first, Jacque touched her remote control pad and the table suddenly opened to present the James Bond OO7 Films Wine Collection. Eighteen magnums of Cabernet wine from Napa Valley wineries each represent different Bond films. These one- of-a kind bottles are each laser-edged.
