Enter the Garden of Eden

June 27th, 2010 • by Sandy Zimmerman

“Enter the Garden of Eden”

By Sandy Zimmerman

(Photos by Sandy Zimmerman)

Imagine steaming hot mineral springs and waterfalls awaiting you, but instead of imagining this scene you must come to The Springs Resort and spa!

Couples will feel like Adam and Eve discovering the Garden of Eden when they walk along the romantic paths from the resort to the eighteen, yes eighteen, amazingly designed steaming mineral pools.

Guests are in another world, a place of beauty and tranquility.

All of these unique pools seem to be inviting you to indulge in this wondrous oasis.

There are so many pools, which ones should you choose?

Do you want to sit by a waterfall?

Each mineral water pool is different as is their settings.

Take your time because this is an experience to savor.

I have traveled around the world and have never seen this many mineral pools in one resort!

Oh, the sensations you will feel, the pleasure of relaxing and soaking your body in the steaming hot water.

And while you are in this stupor of unbelievable joy, open your eyes to look out at the famous Aranal Volcano.

Combining the excitement of a frequently erupting volcano with the pleasures of soaking in hot pools is just too much to comprehend.     (Continued)

During our first day on tour in Costa Rica, even breakfast was an event!  We began at the traditional Restaurante Tipico el Trapiche de Nayo, stopping to see the authentic Trapiche process for crushing whole sugar cane originally used in the early days of the sugar cane plantations.

#2-Minimally Invasive Hip Replacement Surgery

June 22nd, 2010 • by Sandy Zimmerman

Feature #2-  Dr. Todd V. Swanson, MD, Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon: “Fewer Complications”

Dr. Swanson mentioned another benefit of the minimally invasive hip replacement technique, “There are so many types of minimally invasive hip surgery, at least four- to-five different techniques since we developed our technique 11 years ago;

Many surgeons are not adequately trained or do not get adequate visualization.

I use this procedure, teach it all over the world, and have developed it very well;  We teach surgeons exactly how to do the procedure;  Our complication rate is actually lower when I study my traditional incision patients with my minimally invasive patients.”

“What Are the Symptoms of Arthritis and Joint Problems?”

“The most common symptom is pain.  It is normal for people to suffer from a little bit of pain, which comes with activities and aging.  If you are developing pain that is limiting your activities or altering your lifestyle of daily living this is the time to seek attention either with your primary care doctor or an Orthopedic surgeon.

If the problem is not too serious like Tendonitis, Bursitis, or muscle pain, your primary care doctor can treat them.  If the problem is serious, you may need more aggressive treatment, not always surgery, sometimes injections or other treatments.”

Can Arthritis be Prevented?

“There is no absolute way to prevent arthritis; We all develop arthritis as we age but our lifestyle can lessen the chance of having arthritis.  Exercise is good but some types are harder on the joints like impact loading exercises when you are putting a pounding stress on hips as in running and jumping.  Always run on a soft surface.  People who run on a hard cement surface are more likely to damage their hip or knee joints.  A healthy diet is also important.

What Is a Hip Replacement?

When a person develops arthritis, as most of us do when we get older, it can become so severe they have significant pain.  Arthritis is basically the loss of the cartridge cushion in the joint.  A total hip replacement removes worn or roughened areas of the bone and the damaged parts must be replaced with new artificial parts in order to take away the patient’s pain.”

Problems when Using Cement in Hip Replacement

“Cement was common in hip replacement surgery.  The original total hip surgery developed in the 70′s and 80′s, all used cement to hold the implant to the bone.  Eventually the cement cracked and loosened causing the patient to undergo a second operation.  Sometimes the cement is pressurized inside the bone which pushes the bone marrow contents into the blood stream flowing into the heart and lungs.  We did studies using ultra-sound pressurizing cement and looking at the heart.  It looked like a snow storm with debris going into the heart and lungs.  We have stopped using cement because of the successful technologies today.  A hip prosthesis can be placed inside the patient potentially to last the rest of their life.   (Continued)

Imagine Paradise before it was Discovered!

June 20th, 2010 • by Sandy Zimmerman

“Imagine Paradise before it was Discovered!”

By Sandy Zimmerman

(Photos by the Savegre Resort and the

Costa Rica Tourist Board except where indicated.)

Imagine a wilderness yet to be discovered, a place of beauty for wild animals and birds to flourish.

Imagine walking through this wilderness for the first time, your excitement, your senses are heightened!

This is the tropical paradise Efrain Chacon and his brother Federico discovered and immediately loved.

In 1954, they had been tracking a tapir and veered off the trail as fate changed their lives.

So extraordinary was the setting, Efrain immediately decided to settle there.

Although the wilderness was untouched, it would not yield shelter easily.

They had to sleep in caves by the Savegre River and endure the hardships of life in the rain forest.

There were no people, no roads, and no trails, only wild animals and the beauty of nature.

The closest neighbor was many miles away.

Efrain claimed the land and began to raise cows but the jaguars kept eating them.

Industrious and always thinking, Efrain stocked the river with trout.

When people heard of the abundant number of exceptionally large trout, they hiked from San Jose through the jungle to the river.

Finally the Club Nacional de Pesca (fish) promoted his retreat.

The only place to stay and eat was with Efrain and his family in their home.

Because so many people were coming by the end of the 70’s, Efrain had to build three cabins and a road which would take four-wheel drive vehicles.

Later the beautiful natural untouched region drew visitors for its other attractions.
