“The Savegre Hotel has everything you could want”

By Sandy Zimmerman

(Photos by Sandy Zimmerman)

If you could enjoy the wilderness yet still have all of the comforts of a luxury resort, the Savegre Hotel, Natural Preserve & Spa is the perfect choice.

Call it a

romantic

setting for a

honeymoon, a

retreat, or

a place for families to enjoy together, the hotel has

something for everyone.

The Savagre is a wilderness setting filled with natural

beauty and a feeling of escape from the world.

Their accommodations have a touch of rustic

luxuryand charm while surrounded by nature.

I enjoyed walking from the cottage and stopping at the

bridge to see the

rushing brook on

the way to the

restaurant.

Our cottage was

quite large and we

loved

the fireplace at night.  The 20 cottages are set

aside with four cottages in each block,

with private hot-water bath, heating, gardens, and

international calls.

During the evening, their Las Bromelias Restaurant

seemed to

become

festive with

traditional

dancing

and

musical

entertainment.

Guests can order

from the ala

carte menu or decide to try the extensive all-you-

can-eat buffet. You would not expect to find such a

wonderful selection of international and Costa Rican

cuisine in the

wilderness.

Their

specialty is

trout caught right

there in the Savegre

River.

A guide brings you across over exciting trails to discover

the rain forest’s delights, to see waterfalls, fish for trout,

and watch for wildlife.  There are over 30 miles of trails

with options for everyone, from easy short trails to

climbing mountains or the trails along the river. You

may wish to ride horses or a 4×4 cruiser tour into the

cloud forest. With over 170 species of birds, you will not

be disappointed on the bird watching tour.

The Savegre

Hotel has a

commitment

with nature and

the community

with a

Certification for

Sustainable

Tourism with the level of four leaves. They are

committed to the preservation of the environment and

the development of social and economic growth of the

community of San Gerardo de Dota. The owners,

Caridad Ziniga & Efrain Chacon make the concerted

effort that all activities impact the environment as little

as possible.

  3. When hunting tops, clearings, river flats etc invest in a good pair of binoculars. Spend alot of your time glassing from areas that give you a good vantage point. Once again change of light is the best time for these areas. Also look for pieces of an animal as well as the whole thing. Sometimes only a part is visable. This also applies for bush hunting, sometime you may only see an ear etc. Also try to look through the forest rather that at it.
