Health Care Your Way!

By Sandy Zimmerman

With the high cost of health care and the bad economy, Consumer Direct

Personal Care has the answer.

Laura Coger, Program Manager, explains, “We

specialize in self-directed home care and want people to have home care

their way meaning the days, hours, time, and whatever help is needed to

stay active at home.

When the person is paying privately, we can help with

a wider variety of services, e.g., pet care, playing cards

with dad, companionship, meal prep, assistance with showering and

dressing, transferring in and out of

bed and/or wheelchairs, and all non-medical type of care.

The care plan could be for one hour a day, one-two days a week, or if their

caregiver is a relative or friend who just needs a break.

When a person is in a state program like aging services or Medicade,

they get a care plan which tells what help they are allowed to receive

to stay at home instead of institutional settings.

This is different from

the privately paid

plan.

For example, one

young

girl, 20 years old,

suddenly suffered a stroke and

became fully disabled seven years ago, now she lives in an accessible

apartment and has hired her own care givers.

Being able to stay in their own home and surroundings makes a person feel

good.

A nice friendly person comes in to do whatever is needed.

The folks we talk to have waited so long and are so happy to finally be in

control of their own care.

The traditional way has been to arrange for a care giver to come to

someone’s home without giving the person any choice.

A new care giver shows up to assist them with showering or other personal

help and these folks are on an agency schedule rather than theirs.

We spoke to a lady who had no control over when she took a shower.

That is one of the reasons why she is so happy with our services along with so

many other folks happy

to finally be in control.

With our self-directed

services, you are in

control of hiring, firing,

deciding the times you

want them, etc.

We are a support

system and do the

paperwork, payroll,

and all the rest.

wonderful publish, very informative. I wonder why the other specialists of this sector do not understand this. You must continue your writing. I am confident, you’ve a great readers’ base already!

Health Care Your Way (Continued)

The circumstances are varied whether a person just had an

accident and needs help temporally, or is recovering from

surgery, has a long term illness, we can help with pet care

to health care.

Consumer Direct gives you a choice to decide if you wish

a family member, neighbor, or friend to be your caregiver.

You may need a back-up plan for hiring a caregiver when

they are on vacation or unavailable.

We also have a Caregiver's Candidate list in case you

prefer to hire someone else.

These are people who want to be caregivers but have not

been hired yet.

You interview the caregivers and are in charge of hiring.

If someone is going to take care of you it is better to meet

them before they are hired.

See who they are and find your comfort level to get a

feeling whether you like them.

Everybody has a person who fits better for them.

You can even hire your relative, friend or neighbor.

People who are eligible for our care services are members

of Medicare, Medicade, over 55 years of age, or blind.

The Consumer Direct Personal Care covers the cost for

all of the pre-employment required check-up expenses.

Potential caregivers must have a background check from

the Nevada Department of Public Safety and in rural areas

at the Sheriff's department.

They enroll in a class to learn CPR, test for TB, and have

specific training in handling the person.

I think it is necessary today to have the Consumer Direct

Care services for people in all types of circumstances.

Laura is always happy to explain their program of self

direction and answer questions.
