American Country Awards-2011

December 22nd, 2011 • by Sandy Zimmerman

Multi-Platinum winner/ Co-Host of the American Country Awards

(Photos shot by Sandy Zimmerman during the red carpet and in the Garden Arena studio.)

I love attending the Academy Awards and all of the other major professional recognitions of excellence in their crafts.  This was my first time covering the American Country Awards as I went to interview the celebrities on the Red Carpet.

Carrie Underwood, Artist of the Year-Female.

The excitement began as the celebrities arrived. Even though it was unusually cold this afternoon, the females walked the red carpet in their beautiful gowns along with the males in western attire.

Craig Campbell, ACA Performer, 3 time Nominee,

There were some new names in country music and many of countries’ superstars. Multi-platinum recording artist Trace Adkins, co-host with Tony award winner Kristin Chenoweth, admitted he had not followed instructions when he hosted last year’s ACA awards but now perhaps Kristin will keep him in line. During the duo’s hilarious scene, Kristin was hanging by her specially designed jeans which fit around both of them while Trace swung her back and forth. Trace’s well built body stands 6’6” with Kristin’s small 4’11” made this even wilder.

American Idol's Scotty McCreery, New Artist of the Year,

The audience enjoyed the featured performances by Alabama, Toby Keith, Eli Young Band, The Band Perry, Scotty McCreery, Pistol Annies, Blake Shelton, Thompson Square and Chris Young.

Chris Young, Breakthrough Artist, Single of the Year Award

Magic with a French Twist

July 24th, 2011 • by admin

(Photos shot by Sandy Zimmerman during the live show except for two as indicated.)

French-born Stephane Vanel brought a different type of magic to the Paris Resort. Stephane’s “The Magic of Paris” show is a perfect match, oh, la, la, as French as they get!

Stephane’s smooth card manipulations were amazing. Some of his classic movements were mixed with new innovations while others were his own creations. Switching from cards to coins and balls, Stephane took slight-of-hand magic to another level.

Stephane’s White Box illusion finale deserves rave reviews. The White Box is small and narrow only big enough for his petite female assistant. Once she enters the box the audience only sees her hands continuously moving. After he keeps making the box smaller and smaller, the audience wonders, “What happened to the girl?” You really have to experience this illusion for yourself.

Even though I was photographing the show near the stage, I couldn’t see how he did it!

Besides making objects or people appear and disappear at will, Stephane’s dancing talents are also demonstrated in his very sensual, hot tango that would probably win on “Dancing with the Stars”.

Although Stephane has appeared in several Las Vegas shows, this is his first time as headliner. His credits include a seven-year run in MGM Grand’s Crazy Horse Paris, as well as appearances in “Crazy Girls” at the Riviera.  In France, Vanel gained fame hosting his own television series “Fun TV Magic” and soon became a worldwide success noted for his charm and magical skills.

But there is more than magic and illusions, you will be happy to see the show is also packed with a variety of acts-

Mark Kornhauser-

comedian Mark Kornhauser’s comedy, puppeteer Anthony Rais and a pair of beautiful female dancers.

When you look for a Spa, think of your Health first.

June 26th, 2011 • by Sandy Zimmerman

(Photos by Sandy Zimmerman)

Dr. Danka Michaels, Director of the Blue Point Medical Spa, explains, “If you maintain a good diet and exercise, than the toxins (Metabolites) will be expelled by themselves and not stored in the tissues.

Probably the most important thing about the Blue Point Medical Spa is that everything is supervised by a physician.

Treatments are coordinated with your medical conditions in mind.

One treatment we recommend, the Ionithermie, is a combination of mud which is applied on the body along with theoretic and galvanic currents to help the exchange between the mud and tissue in order for the tissues to open up and extract all of the toxins.

Our therapists prepare a body mask to apply from underneath the burdocks to the arm pits, underneath the breasts to the thighs, and other areas of the body.

Each treatment lasts 20 minutes with preparation of 10 minutes and a 10 minute clean-up.

You should not eat anything fatty or sugary to help get your body going, and drink a lot.

We have some clients who lost one dress size.

The clay is composed of ivy extract, berries, and mud imported from France.

As evidenced all over the world, in over one million applications annually, the patented body mask contains natural materials such as guarana berry, ivy extracts and 104 trace elements from the sea.

This helps with detoxification and to improve circulation … melting away the root cause of the orange peel problem. Complete clinical studies are available by request.

The Family Music Center has so many possibilities.

June 17th, 2011 • by Sandy Zimmerman

(Photos By Sandy Zimmerman)

Looking for fun places to go where you can meet people and have a great time?

An attractive patio leads into the store with each room specializing in a different musical instrument. Whatever you want, it is probably in one of the rooms.

During the tour of the center, I stopped to watch their organ class and it was obvious they were enjoying themselves. The teacher made learning to play the organ fun. The feeling continued at their get together afterwards with snacks and soft drinks for everyone.

Jim Mason, the owner, explained, “It is almost like a social club tied to music.  That’s the way to do it. We introduced so many people to music over the years and developed the love of music and friendship outside music.”

Maybe romance!

Jim is proud of their lessons. “The ages range from 4 up to 85 years old. Everybody loves music, it is universal. Whether they are rich or poor, young or old, music transcends everything. Some people have no experience they cannot play a single note and you should see their progress. They have over 50 teachers providing from 6-8,000 private and group lessons every month on organs, pianos, guitars, violins, and all types of instruments. With the American Idol, America’s Got Talent, and all of the other shows, young budding stars can get that clarinet or trombone and take lessons. Our store has the largest private lesson program in Nevada.

I saw a unique Steinway Square Grand piano which is now obsolete,  (Continued)

Rich Little Brings a Lot of Laughs

May 30th, 2011 • by Sandy Zimmerman

(Photos shot by Sandy Zimmerman during the live show.)

RICH LITTLE- THE KING OF IMPRESSIONS

I have enjoyed reviewing Rich Little’s show beginning in the 80’s and throughout the years to his most recent opening night for “Laugh a Little”, at the Starlight Theater, inside the Riviera Hotel.

A master of impressions, Rich has led the way with his spoofs and good natured satirical sketches.

It’s nothing personal; the impressions are all very funny.

With a little singing and a little dancing, Rich sparks up his new material and old favorites.

And there’s always some new impressions keeping up with the recent news and events.

One shtick that is always funny is his “Political” commentary.

Whenever he is going to “talk politics”, Rich suddenly burst into his special number, “Sing a Little song about Washington” pausing for impressions of Clinton,

President Bush- senior and junior, Carter, Reagan, and Nixon.

Rich understands politicians with an ability to choose the funny side of politics.

He dances around and sometimes marches to the beat of the music.

A Tasting Party at the ARIA Resort’s UNION Restaurant

May 29th, 2011 • by Sandy Zimmerman

KOBE BEEF SLIDERS

(Photos by Sandy Zimmerman)

The beautiful new ARIA Resort has been known for their creativity and the uniqueness of their designs, I can say each time I have attended an event here everything was perfect.

An invitation to taste the UNION Restaurant’s new seasonal menu is very special because it means a delicious array of one- of- a- kind creations! I am always amazed when the top chefs get together and the results are like magic!

Thinking about tasting the UNION Restaurant’s new menu and with hints of a Chef’s Interactive Table, I was happy to attend. The party was held at the top tier of the restaurant with views of the other levels and casino.

A special table was arranged for the guest’s interactive tasting experience. Some of the ARIA Hotel’s top chefs were preparing the “feast of all feasts” for us to taste and savor. There were ingredients which we seldom see mixed together yet after tasting each dish, I felt they belonged together.  This was a rare opportunity for the guests to speak to the chefs, ask questions, and watch how they create their signature dishes.

The chefs call their cuisine, “A unique international twist on classic comfort food with Mediterranean, Spanish, Italian, and Asian twist.”

The chefs cooked lamb on a small wood grill, topped it with Yogurt Tzatziki sauce, and placed the lamb kabobs on small homemade petas. This was a clever way to present the lamb kabobs and they looked as great as they tasted.  The lamb was very tender with tastes of the delicate flavors of the marinade.

Another chef prepared the Yellowtail Crunch and a touch of spicy masago caviar with the crunch of crispy wonton.

I have seen sliders around Las Vegas but not as big as these and the serving includes three sliders each filled with three-ounces of Kobe Beef, aged Cheddar cheese, grilled onions, tomatoes, secret sauce, and a side of spiced fries.

TERIYAKI CHICKEN DRUMSTICKS

Guests couldn’t miss seeing the extra- large Teriyaki Chicken Drumsticks on the platter but after the first taste, the Korean Sweet & Spicy Teriyaki sauce was tantalizingly addictive.

Bacio means KISS!

May 23rd, 2011 • by Sandy Zimmerman

(Photos By Sandy Zimmerman)

The two piece band were playing while guests

filled the restaurant;

it was a food tasting party to introduce the press and VIP’s to

Bacio by Carla Pellegrino’s Mediterranean cuisine.

I walked around the buffet table and was thrilled to see all of the

selections.

Once I noticed Carla’s jumbo shrimp I was hooked!

Their jumbo shrimp were really jumbo, six to a pound, and

tasted great with a delicate butter, garlic, and lemon juice sauce.

The shrimp were not swimming in the sauce, yet they held the

taste in every bite. With such large shrimp, I decided to make

them my meal along with some of the caprese and spinach

salads.

There were several different Italian rolls and bread as well as

bread sticks.

A chef stood at the carving section ready to cut your port

reduction crusted ribeye exactly to your specifications.

Of course Carla’s menu offers pasta, not only one or two choices

but penne, spaghetti, linguine, and rigatoni.

Ricky Martin’s Show was Hot . . . Hot . . . Hot!

May 20th, 2011 • by Sandy Zimmerman

(Photos shot by Sandy Zimmerman during the live show.)

Ricky Martin brought all of the passion of his “Musica + Alma + Sexo” show to Caesars Palace’s Colosseum Theater. From the moment the show opened with a video of Ricky bound in chains struggling to free himself to the frantic beat of his finale, Ricky’s show was Hot . . . Hot . . . Hot!

The excitement built into a frenzy of sensual dancing and pulsating music. With such a high energy performance and seemingly non-stop action, each number became more explicit than the last. They named the show “Musica + Alma + Sexo” (Music, Soul and Sex), a perfect description of what to expect. The stage was “on-fire” with Ricky and his dancers in their daring interpretations of each song.

I enjoyed the uncontrollable, frantic emotion of the dancing combined with Ricky’s raw animal magnetism. His performance touched the audience and I think Ricky will gain many new fans. He really took command of the stage.

It seemed like a simple three tiered metallic scaffold bridge setting divided into nine squares but Ricky can make anything exciting. Ricky and his dancers slid down poles and moved about the squares using them as props for their choreography. Even the shirtless guitarists joined in the dancing while playing.

Paula Poundstone is Different!

May 15th, 2011 • by Sandy Zimmerman

(Photos shot by Sandy Zimmerman during the live show.)

I had a chance to interview comedian Paula Poundstone before

her show and felt she had a refreshing “honesty” about herself.

Paula spoke to me just as she did to the audience at the Suncoast

Hotel.

“My act is autobiographical. I talk about raising three kids and

16 cats.

Just like every other parent, I try to strike that balance.

Fortunately I love my work and I love taking care of my kids so

those are my two favorite things to do which is lucky because

that’s all I ever get to do except for an occasional game of ping

pong.”

Sixteen cats are a lot of cats and a lot of litter boxes!

She complained, “A lot of people say ‘how did you get 16 cats?’

I’ll tell you exactly how I got 16 cats, I had 15 and I got one more.

I swear, I sift litter so much I have a callous on my hand.

I’m a trained professional sifter which is ironic because I never

enjoyed the beach that much.

Sifting is my main job.

Swirl with Us

May 8th, 2011 • by Sandy Zimmerman

U-SWIRL FROZEN YOGURT

(Photos: Sandy Zimmerman)

Everybody is swirling since U-Swirl Frozen Yogurt has come to

Las Vegas! U-Swirl is unique, not like any of the other yogurt

places.

Dana Cartright, Director of Operations and Franchise Trainer,

discussed U-Swirl, “We are the King of frozen yogurt.

There is lots of space for customers to enjoy themselves with

family and friends.

They can sit on the couches and lay back with their feet up

on foot stools.

The bright colors make people happy and relaxed when they

come in after a hard day of work.

The walls are filled with pictures of fruit to show what

is available.”

I eat yogurt everyday for breakfast and was anxious to try theirs

but I do not eat sugar.

-FRUIT-

Dana explained, “The majority of our flavors are non-fat, we have

a few low fat with no sugar added, non-dairy sorbet, low sodium,

and many options with over 60 toppings to add to your

experience of swirling.

If you have a sweet tooth, there are all types of candies, brownies,

and syrups or for the healthy diet choose fresh fruits.

We offer 16 or 20 flavors depending whether you visit our two

super swirlers or the other five.”

-ASSORTED CANDIES-

I have never tried to use a yogurt machine before but it was easy.

Walking down the aisle looking at all those flavors was fun.

Enjoy an Enchanted Evening

May 3rd, 2011 • by Sandy Zimmerman

(Photos shot by Sandy Zimmerman during the live show.)

The Tropicana Hotel’s showroom was filled with the soulful

sounds of seven-time Grammy award winner Gladys Knight.

She sang about love with so much feeling you realize

it came from her heart.

With such intensity of her emotions and an earthiness in her

voice, Gladys’ new show “A Mic and a Light” brought the “real”

Gladys Knight.

Gladys’ warm friendly introduction set the mood,

“Welcome to my house.

I am honored, excited, and all of those things.

We have got things to do and places to go.

Tonight I’m gonna’ take you back where we started.”

That’s exactly what the audience wanted and they showed

their appreciation.

Beginning with a stirring “Midnight Train to Georgia”, Gladys’

musical selections included “You’re the Best thing that ever

happened to me”, “The Way we were”, and many of her classic

hits as well as songs from her new album.

Bubba Knight is featured in the show.

I interviewed Merald Bubba Knight, Gladys’ oldest brother

during the VIP/Media party before the show.

Bubba was excited, “The show’s title “A Mic and a Light” means

just that.

Early days- Gladys Knight and the Pips-

We’ve seen so many of the other performer’s shows with

fireworks, people getting shot from canons and fanfare.

Gladys said, ‘I’m going to eliminate all of that and sing to the people.

It is just going to be me, a light and a mic.

I am going to do what my gift is and just sing.’

The audience loves her songs.

Those songs are invaluable, priceless and she does such an

outstanding job with them.  It is the best of R&B and Soul!

Gourmet Meals can be Reasonable

April 17th, 2011 • by Sandy Zimmerman

(Photos: Sandy Zimmerman)

There is a place where you can relax, take a break, and recharge

yourself.

The Hammer Bar and Grill offers the perfect down-to-earth

setting.

As the co-owner and Executive Chef, Chris Sarret explained, “We

do not have a theme.

There are no palm trees or anything like that.

I wanted to create an atmosphere where people could come in

and not feel they have to dress and just have a good time for a

minimal amount of money.  This is one of Las Vegas’ reasonable

restaurants.

This is a friendly bar with great food, what more could you want?

And you can win money too.

There is nothing wrong with that, two of my favorite things.

My partner and I try to create an atmosphere that is fun for

everybody.”

You would not expect a gourmet restaurant in a cocktail lounge,

but Chris takes a lot of pride in their food.

He is the man who prepares all of the great food himself and it

really is great.

He graduated from the famous Le Cordon Bleu School so you

have a first class chef here.

I should describe my “tasting” as dining. The shrimp were

crusted with garlic while being toasted on the grill for a crispy

taste.

The Remoulade dipping sauce and cheesy garlic bread were

perfect complement to the dish.

After eating Hammer’s shrimp, I would say, “Their food is

reasonable and WORTH EVERY BITE!

Another great reason to come to the Hammer, you can probably

find almost any game from Keno, poker, slots, Black Jack,

including 10-15 different games on every slot machine.

Change your luck by changing games with their big selection of

games from .05 cents to $5.

Under the Spell of the King of Romance

“Under the Spell of the King of Romance”

By Sandy Zimmerman

(Photos shot by Sandy Zimmerman during the live concert.)

Engelbert Humperdinck’s opening night, at the Orleans’ Hotel, was very special marking the

beginning of a new tour to introduce his latest album “Released” on Universal Records.

Romance and love have always been the theme of Engelbert’s shows and

tonight he sang with all of the passion of over four decades in show business.

A man known as the symbol of “love”, Engelbert’s golden voice

thrilled the audience.

His songs still had all the tenderness and emotional fire of the times I reviewed his concerts in the

80’s, 90’s, and continuing up to the present time.

Always satisfying audiences, Engelbert will be celebrating his 75th birthday this year.

As Engelbert said, “I want to take you back in time to bring some songs which made it

possible for me to be here this evening.”

And that is exactly what the enthusiastic audience wanted to hear.

Engelbert was as charming as ever.

Please Note:  Discover the Ultimate Entertainment’s Las Vegas show reviews feel Engelbert Humperdinck is still a romantic singer!

You Can Live the Fantasy

February 23rd, 2011 • by admin

“You Can Live the Fantasy!”

By Sandy Zimmerman

It all began in DJ Loczi’s vivid imagination and later became a fantasy

of lights, sounds, animation, special effects, and everything else he

could squeeze into his “Electric Dream” extravaganza.

An incredible

experience

awaits you unlike

anything you

have ever

known.

Let yourself go

and feel the

excitement while

all of your senses

are reeling.

Electric Dream surprises everyone because it is only happening AT

THAT MOMENT and changes according to the whims of the star DJ

Loczi.

Better not look away or you will miss something.

He revs up the dancers with his music then completely changes the

mood.

For the first time, a spectacular production show is appearing in a

night club setting combining all of the thrills of “Electric Dream” with

the romance of dancing.

Some people watch the show while they are dancing, than stop to see

the special effects and continue to dance, while others want to give

their full attention to the show.

DJ Loczi is really an important part of the show.

Watch his face changing with the beat sometimes he seems captivated

caught in an uncontrollable frenzy.

Loczi is ONE with the music.

Like a conductor, Loczi is aware of everything that is happening,

giving cues to the next act, orchestrating all of the pieces that are

involved in this multi-dimensional production.

DJ Loczi explained, “Realistically what I offer and what is very unique

is I might play Aretha Franklin or James Brown, and then an original

track.

Realistically the music is very diverse. We take songs which were

iconic at the original studio 54 and rebuilt, re-mastered, remixed to make them fresh and

relevant for today’s dance floor.

So someone who never experienced that song and never understood

how powerful that song was at the iconic studio 54 in New York are

now hearing it for the first time and realizing WOW this is a really

amazing piece of music.
